The aim of green infrastructure planning is to identify green infrastructure assets and opportunities, and plan a network of corridors that are priority areas for developing and enhancing green infrastructure.
Assessment of five core components of green infrastructure enables a comprehensive overview to be taken in planning the network. The five core components are:
Landscape – conservation and enhancement of important landscapes
Biodiversity – new habitat creation alongside enhancement and better linkages for wildlife
Historic environment – improved management, public access and interpretation of heritage assets
Access routes – improved connections across the county for walkers, cyclists and horseriders
Accessible greenspace – enhancement of key sites and
greenspace creation in areas of deficit |
Green infrastructure plans can help shape the future of the area, alongside, and integrated with, aspirations for housing, transport, employment and economic growth.

The green infrastructure plans provide information about assets, opportunities for improving, and priorities for protecting, enhancing and creating green infrastructure. The strategic plan identified broad priorities across Bedfordshire, and the three more detailed plans provide more detailed spatial information. All the plans are based on the analysis of biodiversity, landscape, the historic environment, access routes, and accessible green space.
